You Must Learn These Basic Quilting Skills If You Are A Beginner!

Congratulations on wanting to start a new hobby! Quilting is an exciting and fulfilling hobby that a lot of people enjoy and it is about time you try it out! You’ll learn that it is easy to do and a lot of fun. This article will help you on this new pastime. Beginners you should learn the basic tips so that you can pass your quilts on to your children, grandchildren, friends, and neighbors. Here are a few tips you need to know about as a beginning quilter.

Know basic quilt terminology. Get yourself some basic patterns, a simple book, magazine or a quiltmaking glossary. These come in handy because you will pick up a lot of knowledge by reading the instructions and studying the patterns. As a beginning quilter it is understandable that most of the terms are unfamiliar. Don’t get disheartened, with a simple  book or magazine you’ll begin to understand all the terms you need to know.

Practice the basic techniques and tips. My advice to beginners is to collect some of the techniques that you’ll need to remember are: a.)  how to sew a ¼” seam allowance; b.) practice rotary cutting  c.) develop quick piecing techniques such as strip piecing; and d.) develop a routine to press quilt blocks before sewing. These basic skills may seem like extra steps before you can start your projects but learning them and eventually mastering them will help you out in the long run. Start out with a simple pattern. You will love the payoff when your pattern turns out perfectly.

Don’t take errors too seriously. Beginners are bound to make mistakes. Don’t stress out over them. The best way for you to understand… better than studying and reading about them, is through experience. Gain knowledge from the mistakes you make and move on. Find tips from other quilters. Practice is the only cure…your skills will grow with every new quilting project that you finish.


Beginners with a bit of time can get these basic quilting skills and using a good quilting tips will become good habits. You’ll then find it’s easy to make quilts for yourself or as easy gifts!. Be patient with yourself, and most importantly, love the hobby – Happy quilting!
